Giraffe image. The tallest living animal, with an elongated neck, a short, erect mane, shoulders higher than croup and long black tuff on the tail. Their coat has brown to rich chestnut patches separated by a network of light colored bands, and their head is crowned with two horns, males with 1additional middle horn and four small humps. Arid and dry savannas with trees form their habitat, feeding mainly on broad-leafed deciduous foliage which they browse with their long tongue. Giraffes are non-territorial and sociable, living in loose, open herds, but also solitary. 50 to 75 percent of calves are killed by lions or spotted hyenas.
