Waterbuck image. A big, shaggy antelope with long body and neck, with a grizzled gray-brown coat of coarse hair, neck mane and ruff. It has black lower legs, a white rump patch and white under parts, throat, eyebrow line and snout; the horns are curved forward, thick and deeply ridged. Preferring grassland with near water, not more than a few miles away, as it needs to drink almost daily. It grazes at all times of day on medium and short grass rich in protein, but also browses on herb and foliage in dry season. Defassa Waterbucks form herds with dominant males, but other males and even bachelor groups may be allowed on the herd’s property.
